The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to expedite action on the creation of state police following the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State and the brutal killing of a teacher, Mr. Michael Oyedokun .
Adopting a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, the House declared that Nigerians have waited long enough for decentralized security architecture .
“Every further postponement is paid for in the blood of innocents, and brings the nation closer to being overrun,” lawmakers resolved .
The attack, which occurred on May 16, 2026, targeted three schools—Baptist Nursery and Primary School (Yawota), Community Grammar School (Esiele), and L.A. Primary School—with more than 30 pupils and teachers abducted in broad daylight .
In addition to state police, the House called for local government policing units, decentralised courts, an integrated intelligence network, and a permanent military forward operating base in Orire LGA to secure the Old Oyo National Park corridor .
President Bola Tinubu had earlier urged the National Assembly to accelerate state police legislation, while the House noted that constitutional amendment remains a prerequisite for implementation .
