A graduate of Ibadan Polytechnic, Nurudeen Azeez, has come forward with a harrowing account of how an alleged police bullet altered the course of his life, leaving him paralysed and unable to work for five years running.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Azeez says the incident occurred on the night of August 16, 2021, around 9 p.m., shortly after he returned from a trip to Lagos and boarded a commercial motorcycle to his apartment in the Idiakwe area of Ibadan. He says he never made it home that night.
According to his account, gunshots rang out suddenly and he fell from the motorcycle. “Immediately, I just hear the gunshots. Immediately, I fell from the bike,” he recalled of the moment his life changed.
Azeez said the police officer believed to have fired the shot approached him afterward, appearing visibly shaken and sweating as he asked him to stand up. When Azeez told the officer he could not move, the officer allegedly left the scene with colleagues in a golf cart, abandoning him on the road.
CDA News Nigeria reports that a female passerby who recognised Azeez stopped to help, using his phone to alert his friends while a crowd gathered at the scene. Some bystanders reportedly gave chase to the departing officers in a private vehicle, though others urged that getting Azeez to a hospital take priority.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the facility reportedly declined to treat him without an accompanying police report, forcing his friends to make a trip to a police station to secure the necessary documentation before he could receive medical attention.
Five years on, Azeez says he has not recovered. The bullet was eventually removed, he said, but the paralysis has remained permanent. “I’ve been dreaming high, not knowing police shut everything off for me. I want to work. I need my life back. Things has changed,” he said, describing how the ambitions he had built as a polytechnic graduate were extinguished in a single moment on a dark Ibadan road.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the Nigeria Police Force or the Oyo State Police Command addressing Azeez’s allegations or confirming whether an investigation into the incident has been opened.
