The Lagos State Government has arrested a suspected vandal over the alleged theft and destruction of critical structural components from a concrete road barrier at Mile 12 along Ikorodu Road.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the suspect was apprehended at Kosofe Bus Stop during a routine monitoring and enforcement operation carried out by state officials. The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the arrest in a post on his Instagram handle on Saturday.
According to Wahab, the barrier in question was originally installed to prevent pedestrians from crossing the busy expressway at unauthorised points, a safety measure aimed at reducing accidents along the corridor. He said the suspect was caught in the act of deliberately removing structural materials that hold the barrier together.
“The suspect was found deliberately removing iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements, and other critical structural components that contribute to the stability and effectiveness of the concrete barrier,” Wahab said, describing the act as a direct threat to the safety of road users and pedestrians who rely on the barrier for protection.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the commissioner confirmed the suspect has since been taken into custody and will face prosecution in line with extant Lagos State laws guiding the protection of public infrastructure.
“The suspect has been arrested and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Wahab said.
He added that the operation forms part of a broader, sustained effort by the state government to safeguard public assets and improve safety conditions for residents and motorists across Lagos.
“This enforcement action underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and ensuring the safety of all road users and residents,” he stated.
The arrest comes amid a wider clampdown on infrastructure vandalism across Lagos in recent months, with authorities recording similar cases involving suspects targeting road barriers, bridge components, and traffic safety installations. CDA News Nigeria gathered that state officials have repeatedly warned that such acts, often driven by the resale value of scrap metal, endanger lives and impose steep replacement costs on government coffers.
The Lagos State Government has continued to appeal to residents to report suspicious activity around public infrastructure to help curb the growing trend of vandalism across the state.
