Bristol Airport in the United Kingdom has suspended all flight operations for a second consecutive day after engineers discovered a defect on its runway, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and forcing arriving aircraft to be diverted to other airports.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the shutdown began shortly after 6:08 p.m. British Summer Time on Friday, when the airport halted both departures and arrivals as a precaution to allow engineers to inspect and repair the affected section of the runway. The suspension, originally expected to last until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, was subsequently extended to 8:00 a.m. as repair work stretched into a second day.
In a statement issued on its website, a Bristol Airport spokesperson explained that the closure was purely precautionary. “Due to a defect on the runway, we have temporarily suspended operations as a precaution, in order to inspect and repair the section affected,” the spokesperson said, adding: “We apologise for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority.”
The airport has not officially disclosed the exact nature of the defect. However, CDA News Nigeria gathered that one affected passenger, Paul Smith, who had been travelling to Glasgow to celebrate his son’s 20th birthday before the trip was cancelled, said airline staff had described the issue to him simply as “a hole in the runway,” a detail that remains unconfirmed by airport officials.
Passengers described chaotic scenes at the terminal, with some reportedly left “screaming” as flights were abruptly cancelled and travellers herded into a single crowded area at ground level. Smith also criticised the handling of the crisis, saying communication with stranded passengers had been poor, noting that no public announcements were made for over an hour, leaving airline staff as the only source of information for many travellers.
Budget carrier EasyJet issued its own advisory warning customers travelling to or from Bristol to expect continued delays and cancellations. Flights that had been due to land at Bristol on Friday evening were rerouted to London Gatwick, Birmingham, and Cardiff, according to flight-tracking service Airport Webcams.
The airport has directed passengers with flight-specific concerns to contact their airlines directly rather than the airport itself, an arrangement that places the burden of rebooking and compensation on individual carriers rather than Bristol Airport’s management.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that this is not the first time runway issues have disrupted operations at the airport. The facility has previously diverted incoming aircraft to Cardiff and Birmingham following surface damage, while a 2024 incident involving a TUI Boeing 737-800 prompted a formal inquiry by the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch into takeoff thrust problems. The runway also faced scrutiny in 2007 over safety concerns during wet weather, and a 2017 runway excursion led to dozens of cancelled and diverted flights.
As of the time of this report, Bristol Airport says it is targeting an 8:00 a.m. reopening on Saturday, pending the outcome of ongoing inspection and repair work, with officials expected to reassess conditions before allowing flights to resume as normal.
