Police Scrap Tactical Teams Nationwide, Launch New Violent Crime Response Unit

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has ordered a sweeping restructuring of the Nigeria Police Force, leading to the dissolution of all tactical teams across state commands .

The disbanded units are being merged into a single specialised formation known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) .

This reform follows a directive issued in late March aimed at streamlining police operations, curbing the proliferation of tactical squads, and addressing decades-long public concerns over misconduct and abuse of power .

The IGP stated that the proliferation of tactical teams has drained manpower from regular police divisions and led to integrity issues within the Force . Under the new directive, state commands are limited to no more than five tactical teams, though the creation of the VCRU effectively consolidates all squads into one coordinated unit .

Mandate and Accountability

The VCRU is mandated to respond swiftly and decisively to violent crimes while strictly adhering to established rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights . The unit aims to eliminate operational overlaps that previously allowed multiple teams to operate with minimal supervision.

State commands including Rivers, Benue, and the FCT have already confirmed implementation . Police authorities have warned officers against extortion and abuse of office, stressing that disciplinary action will follow any violations .
