El Salvador Begins Historic Trial of 486 Gang Leaders Over 47,000 Crimes

Authorities in El Salvador have launched a massive trial involving 486 alleged gang leaders accused of being linked to approximately 47,000 serious crimes across the country, including murders, extortion, drug trafficking and money laundering .

The proceedings, which began recently, represent one of the largest gang trials in history. The suspects are alleged leaders of factions from the country’s two largest gangs—Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 .

The trial, presided over by Judge Jorge Rivas, is being conducted under a 2022 state of emergency that has suspended certain constitutional rights. The law also includes provisions for gangs to be designated as “terrorist groups,” subject to special measures such as relaxed wiretapping requirements .

This historic prosecution follows ongoing security operations led by President Nayib Bukele, who has overseen a dramatic reduction in murder rates. While homicides in El Salvador have dropped significantly from nearly 6,500 in 2015 to just 114 in 2024, human rights groups have criticized the mass arrests and trials for due process violations .

Nigerians React

The development has drawn global attention, with many Nigerians drawing comparisons to local security challenges. On social media, citizens expressed frustration over leadership failures in tackling crime.

One user wrote: “El Salvador faced the world’s highest murder rate, but Bukele turned it around in 3 years. Meanwhile, kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism continue daily in Nigeria.” Others highlighted differences in political will, urging the Nigerian government to adopt a more coordinated and ruthless approach to dismantling criminal networks and restoring public safety.

The Salvadoran government has defended the crackdown, insisting it is necessary to rid the country of violent criminal structures that had terrorized citizens for decades .
