Nigeria Labour Congress Orders May Day Street Rallies Over Minimum Wage Delay

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its members nationwide to embark on street rallies on May 1, in protest against the continued delay in the implementation of a new national minimum wage.

The directive, issued by the union’s leadership, calls on workers across all states to use the May Day celebration to demand urgent action from the government. According to the NLC, the prolonged delay has worsened the economic hardship faced by Nigerian workers amid rising inflation and cost of living.

Labour leaders stressed that the rallies are intended to draw attention to the plight of workers and to pressure relevant authorities to conclude negotiations and implement a fair wage structure. “Workers can no longer continue to bear the burden of economic challenges without a corresponding adjustment in wages,” the union stated.

The move signals growing frustration within organized labour, as discussions between labour unions and the government have yet to yield a final agreement. Analysts note that the May Day rallies could intensify pressure on policymakers to fast-track decisions on wage reforms.

Despite the planned protests, the NLC emphasized that the rallies are expected to remain peaceful and orderly, urging members to conduct themselves responsibly.

The development sets the stage for a potentially significant May Day demonstration, as workers across Nigeria prepare to make their voices heard on the issue of minimum wage.
