Makurdi, Benue State — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has directed police officers nationwide to shoot on sight anyone found carrying illegal firearms, as part of renewed efforts to combat insecurity across the country. The directive was issued on Friday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Makurdi, Benue State.
CDA News Nigeria gathered from reports that the order followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that the persistent insecurity in Benue State must be decisively addressed. The IGP said the police would intensify operations against armed criminals while ensuring the enforcement of laws relating to the possession of illegal weapons.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over recurring attacks by armed groups, kidnappings, and violent crimes in Benue and other parts of Nigeria. Security agencies have stepped up operations in recent months as the Federal Government seeks to restore peace in affected communities.
“Anyone found carrying illegal firearms should be treated as an armed threat. We must ensure that criminal elements no longer have the freedom to terrorise innocent Nigerians,” the IGP was quoted as saying during the meeting.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Nigeria Police Force is expected to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders to implement the directive. Residents have also been urged to provide credible intelligence to security agencies to support ongoing operations against criminal elements.
