Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has spoken out on his controversial reference to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as “Kachalla” — a term that has stirred significant reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape.
Lawal, a prominent northern political figure, explained that the term “Kachalla” is deeply rooted in Fulani tradition, historically used to honour a brave and distinguished leader among the Fulani people.
His comments come against the backdrop of Atiku’s decision to pitch his 2027 presidential ambition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform — a move that has generated widespread excitement within Fulani communities and political circles across the North.
According to Lawal, the Fulani celebration of Atiku’s ADC ticket reflects a strong sense of ethnic pride and political solidarity, with many viewing the former Vice President as their foremost champion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As Nigeria’s 2027 political season heats up, Atiku’s movement to ADC continues to reshape opposition dynamics across the country.
