Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on journalists to embrace balanced reporting by highlighting both the challenges and successes of Nigeria.
Speaking during the inauguration of the new leadership of the House of Representatives Press Corps in Abuja, Kalu said the media should continue to hold government accountable while also reporting opportunities, achievements, and positive developments across the country.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Kalu noted that Nigeria possesses enormous potential and that the media has a responsibility to project the nation’s strengths alongside its weaknesses.
According to him, discussions with international stakeholders, including European Union ambassadors, revealed concerns that positive stories about Nigeria are often overshadowed by negative narratives.
He challenged journalists to raise public awareness not only about government shortcomings but also about areas where progress has been made, stressing that such balance does not conflict with the ethics of journalism.
Kalu also urged members of the House Press Corps to intensify coverage of parliamentary activities, including legislative debates, oversight functions, public hearings, and constituency engagements, describing the parliament as the “fulcrum of democracy.”
In his remarks, Chairman of the House Press Corps, Gboyega Onadiran, who was sworn in for a second term, pledged continued professional and responsible reporting of the activities of the National Assembly while maintaining journalistic ethics and integrity.
