KANO — Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared that the recent by-election in the state has exposed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a weak, “mushroom political movement” lacking grassroots support.
Speaking after his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), secured a decisive victory in the contest, Yusuf said the outcome confirmed that the NDC poses no credible threat to the political dominance of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano.
“The by-election result has sent a clear signal. The NDC is nothing but a mushroom political movement that cannot withstand the political hurricane in Kano,” Yusuf stated.
The governor attributed the opposition’s poor performance to internal disarray and a disconnect from the electorate’s aspirations. He urged Kano residents to remain steadfast with the NNPP, promising sustained infrastructural development and youth empowerment.
Political analysts say the by-election was widely viewed as a litmus test for the NDC’s strength ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party’s failure to mount a competitive challenge has raised questions about its viability in the North-West.
The NDC leadership has yet to officially respond to Yusuf’s remarks.
