The APC has replaced Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar-Tafida with former Finance Commissioner Ibrahim Augie, but the deputy’s aide and the deputy himself have disputed claims that he was consulted or that legal issues were the reason.
Subtle political tensions are emerging within the Kebbi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 governorship election following Governor Nasir Idris’ decision to replace his deputy with former Commissioner for Finance, Ibrahim Muhammad Augie . The announcement was made on Sunday at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi by the APC National Organising Secretary, Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, during a stakeholders’ visit.
According to Argungu, the decision followed professional legal advice concerning Tafida’s eligibility due to the litigation surrounding the 2023 election, which included an allegation of certificate forgery . He insisted that the decision was taken with Tafida’s understanding and consent .
However, the circumstances have become a subject of controversy. The Deputy Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Yahaya Danjadda, disputed the claim that Tafida had been consulted . Tafida himself later reacted, dismissing claims that the Supreme Court judgment was responsible for his replacement . He described the attempt to link his replacement to the 2023 litigation as “totally unbecoming and bogus” and a move to tarnish his political image . He, however, stated he had no objection to the political change if it was aimed at strengthening the party .
