UMUAHIA — The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State have strongly condemned the suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze by the Abia State University (ABSU) over his social media posts comparing the earnings of university professors to those of commercial tricycle (Keke) riders .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Professor Nwaeze, a lecturer in the Department of Economics, was suspended on Thursday by the university management over posts deemed “inimical to the interests of the University” . The professor had claimed that some professors at ABSU earn less than ₦400,000 monthly, while colleagues in other states earn approximately ₦1.4 million, and that cumulative earnings of Keke riders are higher than what professors receive .
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Abia APC, in a statement by Publicity Secretary Uche Aguoru, described the action as an assault on the fundamental right of a citizen who spoke out against injustice, poor governance, and deteriorating workers’ welfare . “The suspension of a university professor simply because he raised concerns about the welfare of lecturers and made comments deemed ‘uncomplimentary’ to the Governor exposes the alarming level of intolerance of the Abia State Government towards dissent,” the party stated .
Similarly, the Abia PDP expressed solidarity with the embattled lecturer, asserting that his suspension arose from his advocacy for the rights and entitlements of the university community . In a statement signed by State Chairman Abraham Amah, the PDP assured Nwaeze that he was not alone and urged him to remain “steadfast, calm and confident” . The party called on the university authorities to ensure that any action taken complies with due process, fairness, and academic freedom .
Both parties have called for Professor Nwaeze’s immediate recall, with the university stating it has constituted an investigative panel to examine the matter .
