ABUJA — The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to disqualify President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the 2027 presidential election over an alleged discrepancy in his NYSC discharge certificate.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the suit challenges the validity of the certificate submitted by Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The plaintiffs alleged that the NYSC certificate submitted to INEC bears the name “Tinubu Bola Adekunle,” which they claim differs from the President’s name, “Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
CDA News Nigeria reports that the suit invokes Section 137(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that a person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if he has presented a forged certificate to INEC, as well as relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
The plaintiffs are seeking a judicial determination on whether the alleged discrepancy affects Tinubu’s qualification to contest the 2027 presidential election.
“This is precisely why we have gone to court,” Atiku stated, according to court documents. “We are asking the institution holding the records to produce them and the judiciary to examine the evidence and pronounce on it.”
