President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declined assent to two bills passed by the National Assembly, citing constitutional inconsistencies and legal concerns.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the President returned the proposed legislation to the National Assembly, explaining that certain provisions of the bills were inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and therefore required further legislative review.
According to the Presidency, the decision was taken to ensure that all laws enacted comply with constitutional requirements and uphold the rule of law.
The rejection means lawmakers will have to revisit the bills, address the identified constitutional issues, and determine whether to amend the legislation or take further legislative action in line with constitutional procedures.
Constitutional experts say presidential refusal of assent is part of the legislative process and provides an opportunity for lawmakers to correct legal deficiencies before a bill becomes law.
