KANO, NIGERIA – Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and is set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) today, fueling intense speculation about a possible alliance with Labour Party’s Peter Obi ahead of 2027 .
Kwankwaso announced his resignation on Sunday, citing the need for “strategic realignment” in response to the nation’s evolving political landscape . His spokesman confirmed he will officially register with the ADC at his Kano residence on Monday, directing all Kwankwasiyya movement members nationwide to follow suit .
The move has ignited talks of a potential “Obi-Kwankwaso” presidential ticket, as both opposition figures have been seen together recently, hosting strategic consultations in Kano . The ADC now boasts a growing coalition of heavyweight opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former ministers Rotimi Amaechi and Rauf Aregbesola .
“The focus is the ‘Save Nigeria Project’—a broader initiative bigger than any individual’s interest,” a Kwankwasiyya spokesperson said, adding that Kwankwaso is willing to serve as either president or vice president depending on the coalition’s calculations .
Meanwhile, the NNPP founder, Boniface Aniebonam, has distanced the party from Kwankwaso’s move, stating that only his Kwankwasiyya followers may join him, and that the NNPP will not accept him back .
