Lagos Commissioner: New Dump Sites “No Problem” for Host Communities

LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, has assured residents that the establishment of new dump sites will not create problems for host communities as the state transitions to a more sustainable waste management system.

During an inspection of Olusosun and Soluos landfill sites on Saturday, Wahab announced that Lagos is moving from a linear waste management approach to an environmentally friendly system where “waste is now seen as a resource.” The new strategy involves comprehensive recycling, composting, and energy conversion processes that will minimize the amount of waste reaching landfills.

“We are going to recycle some and turn some into compost fertilisers. Then, whatever is left, Lafayette will take its own combustible waste. The harvesters will take theirs to turn into energy,” the commissioner explained. He emphasized that the residual waste requiring landfill disposal would be reduced to “the barest minimum” through these integrated approaches.

The assurance comes as Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city, continues to grapple with waste management challenges while pursuing sustainable urban development solutions.
