Lagos Police Clarify Viral Assault Video, Arrest 13 Suspects for Mob Attack

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 13 suspects in connection with the violent mob assault of a police inspector, an incident that was widely misrepresented in a viral online video.

Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebesi stated on Thursday that the inspector was enforcing a ban on illegal parking on Brown Street in Oshodi when a confrontation with a motorist escalated. During the scuffle, the officer’s firearm was accidentally discharged, with debris injuring passersby and inciting a mob attack.

The police labeled online captions alleging the officer was caught stealing as “false and misleading.” While the inspector faces internal disciplinary action for unprofessional conduct, the Commissioner of Police warned that assaults on officers performing lawful duties are criminal offences.

The 13 arrested suspects are to be prosecuted upon completion of the investigation.
