The House of Representatives has postponed a scheduled debate on the ongoing review of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, citing the need for deeper consultation and alignment on sensitive amendments.
The debate, which was set for Tuesday’s plenary, was stepped down after lawmakers raised concerns over unresolved issues in draft proposals, particularly those relating to state policing, local government autonomy, and provisions that will shape the 2027 general elections.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Review, explained the decision. “We cannot afford mistakes at this stage,” Kalu said. “It is better to have a constitution review process that is credible, inclusive, and technically sound.”
The postponement received cross-party support. Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda warned that rushing the debate could undermine legislative scrutiny and public confidence. “This constitution review is not something we can hurriedly debate for the sake of saying we have started,” Chinda stated. “Members need adequate time to study the proposals, consult their constituents, and understand the implications.”
Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere also backed the deferment, stating the review “must reflect national interest rather than political speed.”
The ongoing review is one of the most comprehensive since 1999, with over 50 amendment proposals submitted by citizens, civil society groups, and state assemblies. The House is expected to reconvene the debate once the committee completes harmonizing the draft proposals.
