UTURU — The suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze by the management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), has been described as an act of censorship aimed at silencing a voice that spoke truth to power about the deteriorating welfare of academic staff in the state .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Elder Victor KN, in a statement titled “The Suspension of Prof. Nnamdi Nweze Is an Act of Censorship,” expressed concern that a professor could be suspended for simply revealing that some ABSU lecturers earn less than ₦400,000 monthly while the institution suffers from unpaid promotional allowances and demoralised staff . He stated, “How can a Professor earn less than ₦400,000 per month? That is a travesty and a gross devaluation of intellectual labour.”
CDA News Nigeria reports that Elder Victor appealed to the ABSU management to rescind the decision, arguing that Professor Nwaeze has an inalienable constitutional right to voice his grievances. The university had earlier suspended the lecturer over social media posts regarding poor remuneration, with management stating the posts were “inimical to the interests of the University” .
The suspension comes amid an ongoing indefinite strike by ASUU-ABSU over unresolved welfare issues, including non-implementation of the 2025 salary structure, unpaid Earned Academic Allowances since 2009, and non-remittance of deductions . Elder Victor called on the Otti administration to respect freedom of expression in Abia State.
