MINNA, NIGERIA – The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, for allegedly shouting “no water, no light” during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s visit to the Emir of Suleja after Eid-el-Fitr prayers on Friday.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended by security operatives after he interrupted the Governor’s visit with the chant, which highlighted the persistent public utility challenges in the state. Police authorities confirmed the arrest, stating that Abdullahi is being held for “disturbing public peace” and for allegedly making remarks deemed capable of inciting public disorder.
“The command is investigating the matter. He was arrested for shouting during the Governor’s visit in a manner considered a breach of public peace,” a police spokesperson said.
Human rights groups have condemned the arrest, describing it as an overreach and an attack on freedom of expression. They called on the state government to focus on addressing the utility issues rather than clamping down on citizens expressing legitimate concerns.
Governor Bago’s administration has yet to comment on the incident. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
