ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the conduct of activist Omoyele Sowore during a court session in Abuja, describing his behavior as disrespectful to the judiciary and a breach of courtroom decorum.
Sowore, who was at the Federal High Court for proceedings related to a matter involving him, reportedly engaged in verbal exchanges with security officials and court personnel, leading to a brief disruption. The NBA, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, criticized the activist’s actions, warning that such conduct undermines the integrity of the judicial process.
“The courtroom is a hallowed space that must be treated with respect. No matter the grievance, there are proper channels to address them. Conduct that disrupts proceedings is unacceptable,” the statement read.
The NBA called on all litigants and their supporters to adhere to the rules of court and allow the judiciary to perform its functions without interference.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate, has yet to respond to the NBA’s condemnation. His supporters have defended him, arguing that he was exercising his right to protest what they described as unfair treatment by security agencies.
The court has since adjourned the matter to a later date.
