Marafa Breaks Ranks, Backs Trump’s “Guns-A-Blazing” Threat Against Nigeria

Former Senator Kabiru Marafa has publicly endorsed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of possible military action in Nigeria, breaking with many of his countrymen who viewed the warning as a violation of national sovereignty.

Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central until 2019, stated his position during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday. He argued that Trump’s aggressive comments could force the Nigerian government to take stronger action against the nation’s worsening security crisis.

“I strongly support the President of America, Donald Trump, for issuing that threat,” Marafa said. “I differ with a lot of Nigerians because most Nigerians look at it from the perspective of sovereignty, patriotism, which I subscribe to. But of what importance is sovereignty to a dead man?”

The former senator maintained that while sovereignty is important, the protection of citizens’ lives must take precedence. He suggested that Trump’s remarks, which specifically highlighted attacks on Christians, have “put the Nigerian government under pressure to act decisively.”

Last month, Trump ordered the Pentagon to plan for potential military action in Nigeria, accusing the government of failing to curb violence he described as persecution. In a social media post, Trump warned the U.S. might “go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’” to eliminate terrorist groups.

The U.S. has recently designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious freedom violations, following up with visa bans on individuals implicated in anti-Christian violence.
