Cult Attack Leaves Officer Dead, 20 Suspects in Police Net

The Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos has arrested 20 suspects in connection with the murder of a police officer and violent cult-related attacks in the Ilesi community near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Umma Ayuba, the incident occurred on the evening of November 29. Suspected members of the Neo Black Movement (NBM), also known as the Aye Fraternity, stormed the area in retaliation for an earlier assault on one of their members.

“As the suspects moved through the neighbourhood, tension escalated, drawing the attention of a police officer who lived in the community,” Ayuba said. “Upon sighting them, the armed cultists opened fire, killing the officer on the spot and leaving two other residents severely injured. In a gruesome twist, the attackers amputated the officer’s left hand and fled with it.”

Following the attack, operatives of the Zonal Dragon Squad launched an intelligence-led operation, raiding a hideout in the Ogbere area of Ogun State in the early hours of December 1. The operation led to the apprehension of the 20 suspects linked to the murder and other offences, including unlawful possession of firearms.

Items recovered from the suspects include firearms, 29 live cartridges, 19 mobile phones, cash, and a vehicle. Police efforts are ongoing to apprehend one suspect still at large, who is believed to be in possession of the late officer’s amputated hand.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police for the zone, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, has urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, reiterating his commitment to ensuring all perpetrators face the full wrath of the law.
