Former senator and media entrepreneur Ben Murray-Bruce has shed light on the circumstances that led former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and five other governors to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
According to Murray-Bruce, internal disagreements, political tensions, and unresolved grievances within the ruling party at the time contributed significantly to the mass defection. He noted that the crisis weakened party unity and created divisions among key stakeholders.
The former lawmaker explained that efforts to reconcile aggrieved members were unsuccessful, leading several influential politicians to seek political alternatives ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Amaechi and the governors eventually joined the opposition coalition that later emerged victorious in the presidential election, ending the PDP’s 16-year hold on power at the federal level.
Political analysts believe the defections marked a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic history, reshaping alliances and altering the country’s political landscape.
Murray-Bruce’s remarks have renewed discussions about the events that preceded the historic 2015 election and the lessons political parties can learn from internal party disputes.
