NAFDAC Resumes Nationwide Enforcement of Sachet Alcohol Ban Amid Industry Outcry

ABUJA – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has resumed nationwide enforcement of its ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small bottles below 200 milliliters, overriding strong objections from the manufacturing industry.

In a statement on Thursday, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated the action aligns with a Senate resolution and is aimed at “protecting children, adolescents, and young adults from the harmful use of alcohol.” She disclosed alarming reports from schools, including a case where a student claimed he could not sit for an exam without first consuming sachet alcohol.

The agency clarified that no production factories were shut down; the enforcement targets only the sale of the prohibited small packaging. NAFDAC cited a five-year Memorandum of Understanding signed with manufacturers in 2018, which included a moratorium that was extended to December 2025 to allow for stock clearance and production adjustments.

Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that the move was not punitive but a fulfillment of Nigeria’s public health mandate and commitment to the World Health Assembly Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol.

The enforcement action comes despite vehement opposition from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), which warned the ban would lead to massive job losses, reduce government revenue, and fuel a dangerous illicit market for unsafe alcohol.
