NASS Set to Pass State Police Bill Before Weekend — Bamidele

The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has announced that the National Assembly will pass the State Police bill before the end of this week, ending months of legislative deliberation.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Bamidele confirmed that both the Senate and the House of Representatives have resolved to give the bill accelerated passage following the rising tide of insecurity across the country.

“State police is no longer a matter of debate; it is a necessity. Nigerians want it, and this National Assembly will deliver it this week,” Bamidele stated.

The bill, which seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow states to establish their own police forces, has passed second reading in both chambers. A joint committee report is expected to be laid on Thursday, with a final vote scheduled for Friday.

If passed, the bill will require ratification by at least 24 state houses of assembly before becoming law.

While some governors have expressed support, others have raised concerns about potential abuse by state executives. The Senate Leader assured that safeguards would be included in the final draft.
