NDC Schedules Nationwide Primaries for May 29 as Party Intensifies 2027 Election Preparations

The New Democrats Congress (NDC) has officially scheduled its nationwide primaries for Thursday, May 29, 2026 — a bold and decisive move that underscores the party’s growing electoral seriousness and its determination to field strong, credible candidates across Nigeria’s federal and state constituencies ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement comes at a critical and highly charged moment in Nigeria’s pre-election political season — with the NDC emerging as one of the fastest growing and most talked-about opposition platforms, buoyed by a string of high-profile defections from the APC and PDP, including the recent arrival of Senator Nkechi Nwaogu of Abia Central who crossed to the NDC after losing her APC senatorial ticket to Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma.

The May 29 primaries will simultaneously cover senatorial districts, federal constituencies, and state assembly seats across all 36 states and the FCT — a nationwide exercise that the NDC says will be conducted in full compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 and under the observation of INEC officials deployed to monitor the process.

Party sources say the decision to conduct all primaries on a single national date reflects the NDC leadership’s commitment to organisational discipline, transparency, and the kind of credible internal democracy that has been conspicuously absent in the disputed primaries of rival parties — including the crisis-ridden ADC presidential primary that saw two major aspirants reject the results.

The NDC’s May 29 primaries are expected to generate significant national attention — particularly in key battleground states where recently defected politicians and grassroots aspirants will be jostling for the party’s coveted tickets in what promises to be a highly competitive internal contest.
