…Bauchi, Edo, Bayelsa, Imo, Rivers Among Worst Hit; Two Killed in Kirfi LGA
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed search and rescue teams across multiple states following torrential rainfall and severe flooding that has killed residents, displaced families, and destroyed critical infrastructure nationwide.
CDA News Nigeria reports that NEMA activated its operational units to coordinate emergency response efforts and deliver relief, as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency warned of persistent heavy downpours during the peak of the rainy season.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that NEMA spokesperson Manzo Ezekiel confirmed that rescue teams are advancing to severely impacted regions. “We are not lowering our guard yet, because the season is still on,” he said.
In Bauchi State, severe flooding killed two people in Kirfi Local Government Area, damaged thousands of homes, and displaced families now sheltering with relatives. In Edo State, overflow from the Ojirami Dam submerged the Enwan-Igarra-Ososo Expressway, drowning livestock and disrupting schools, though emergency repairs have temporarily mitigated dam collapse risks.
In Bayelsa State, rapid erosion along the Ekoli River swallowed more than 200 homes in the Obogoro community, threatening schools and public facilities. In Imo and Rivers States, floodwaters trapped residents in Akwakuma, forcing NEMA to execute evacuations to higher ground, while Port Harcourt neighbourhoods suffered prolonged inundation that damaged homes and community centres.
The deployment follows NEMA’s earlier activation of zonal directorates and operations offices across 15 states after a high-risk flood alert from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.
