Eke O Ako has urged professors at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, to focus on serious research work and refuse to be used for political hatchet jobs against their colleagues.
CDA News Nigeria reports that he made the call in a post on his verified Facebook page. He insisted that the university’s professors should devote themselves to meaningful scholarship rather than being deployed in political schemes against fellow academics.
The remark comes amid a dispute at the institution. ABSU has reportedly escalated disciplinary proceedings against Professor Nnamdi Chinwendu Nwaeze of the Department of Economics, who is scheduled to appear before the university’s Governing Council Staff Disciplinary Committee on Friday, October 2, 2026.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the university suspended Nwaeze on August 13 over social media posts it described as inimical to its interests. In the posts, he raised concerns about lecturers’ welfare and claimed some professors earn below N400,000 monthly. The suspension was later lifted under pressure from the university’s ASUU branch, although management maintained that its investigation would continue.
It was not immediately clear whether Ako’s remark was directed at the proceedings against Nwaeze.
The call adds to the debate over academic freedom, staff welfare and the role of scholars in university politics at ABSU.
