Nigeria Clarifies: 11 Soldiers Still Held in Burkina Faso, Not Yet Released

The Federal Government has corrected earlier reports, stating that the 11 Nigerian soldiers detained in Burkina Faso are still in custody and have not been released.

The soldiers, alongside a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft, were held after making an emergency landing in Bobo-Dioulasso on Monday. While initial reports on Thursday suggested their release, an official statement from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday clarified that the soldiers remain detained as high-level diplomatic engagements continue to secure their freedom and the aircraft’s return.

The incident has heightened diplomatic tensions in the West African region, with Nigeria insisting the landing was a safety precaution, while Burkina Faso alleges an unauthorized entry into its airspace.
