Nigeria and Ethiopia have reached a landmark prisoner transfer agreement that will enable 136 Nigerian inmates currently serving various prison terms in Ethiopia to return home and complete their sentences in Nigeria.
The agreement was facilitated by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to protect the welfare and rights of Nigerians abroad.
Under the arrangement, the affected inmates will be transferred to Nigerian correctional facilities, where they will continue serving the remainder of their jail terms in accordance with applicable laws and international protocols.
The development has been welcomed by families of the inmates, many of whom have endured years of uncertainty and limited access to their loved ones imprisoned overseas.
Government officials noted that the agreement reflects the growing diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ethiopia, while also demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to the humane treatment of its citizens, regardless of their circumstances.
Authorities, however, clarified that the transfer does not amount to a pardon or release. The inmates will remain under lawful custody and are expected to complete their respective sentences within the Nigerian correctional system.
The release of the list of beneficiaries has prompted relatives and friends to verify whether their loved ones are among those scheduled for transfer, offering renewed hope and confirmation of their wellbeing.
Further details regarding the timeline and logistics of the transfer are expected to be communicated by the relevant authorities.
