The Federal Government has rescheduled the airlifting of Nigerian citizens who indicated interest in leaving South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, citing logistical and clearance challenges.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the evacuation flight initially planned for June 12, 2026, has been moved to June 19, 2026.
“A slight delay has become necessary due to ongoing verification of registered persons and final clearance from South African civil aviation authorities,” NiDCOM spokesperson told CDA News Nigeria.
Over 2,500 Nigerians have now registered for the voluntary evacuation since the portal opened last month. Priority will be given to women, children, the elderly, and those with medical conditions.
Evacuees have been advised to maintain contact with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate in Johannesburg for real-time updates. The government assured that reception facilities in Nigeria are ready to provide temporary accommodation and support upon arrival.
