Nigerian Govt Unveils Identities of Alleged Coup Plotters, Files Treason Charges

The Federal Government has formally unveiled the identities of individuals accused of plotting to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, filing a 13-count charge of treason, terrorism, and money laundering against them at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/206/2026, was filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN. The defendants are scheduled to be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

The list of accused individuals includes a former Governor of Bayelsa State and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, who is currently said to be at large. The other defendants are Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana (retd.), Naval Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor (retd.), Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.

The prosecution alleges that the defendants conspired to “levy war against the state to overawe the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” an offence contrary to Section 37(2) of the Criminal Code. They are also accused of failing to disclose security intelligence about a planned treasonable act involving Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji and others, as well as committing terrorism-related offences under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

On the financial side, the government accused the defendants of money laundering linked to terrorism financing. Bukar Kashim Goni is alleged to have retained N50 million from terrorism proceeds, while others are accused of handling millions of naira in cash outside the formal banking system.
