The Nigerian Palm Produce Association of Nigeria (NPPAN) has announced plans to establish large-scale oil palm plantations across northern Nigeria, a move aimed at boosting agricultural output and stimulating local economic development.
Speaking at a recent press briefing, NPPAN officials highlighted the strategic importance of expanding oil palm cultivation to the region, citing abundant land, favorable climatic conditions, and the potential to create thousands of jobs.
The initiative is part of the association’s broader goal to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector and reduce dependency on imported palm oil.
According to the NPPAN, the project will involve collaboration with state governments, private investors, and local communities to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.
Officials emphasized that the plantations will incorporate modern agricultural techniques, mechanized farming, and environmentally friendly practices to maximize yield and minimize ecological impact.
“The northern region offers vast potential for oil palm cultivation,” said a NPPAN spokesperson. “By investing in large-scale plantations, we aim to generate employment, increase local production, and contribute to Nigeria’s food security.”
Experts believe that such initiatives could significantly impact rural economies, providing livelihoods for farmers and youth while fostering industrial growth in associated sectors like processing and distribution.
The association has called on all stakeholders to support the initiative, stressing that successful implementation will require cooperation between government agencies, private sector players, and local communities.
If realized, the project could position northern Nigeria as a major hub for palm oil production, complementing existing plantations in the south and helping to meet domestic and export demand.
