Traders at the Mowe/Ofada Market in Ogun State are counting their losses following the demolition of parts of the market by the state government, an exercise that has disrupted commercial activities and affected the livelihoods of many business owners.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that several shops and makeshift structures were pulled down during the demolition, leaving traders to salvage goods and assess the extent of their losses.
Some affected traders expressed frustration over the development, claiming they suffered significant financial setbacks. They appealed to the Ogun State Government to provide support and consider measures that would ease the impact of the demolition on their businesses.
Government officials, however, maintained that the exercise was carried out in line with urban planning and environmental regulations aimed at improving public safety, restoring order and facilitating infrastructure development in the area.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the demolition has generated mixed reactions among residents, with some supporting the government’s action on the grounds of urban renewal, while others call for adequate notice, compensation, and alternative trading spaces for the affected traders.
