Former United States Vice President Al Gore has warned that the world is running out of time to tackle climate change, calling on lawmakers across the globe to demonstrate stronger political leadership in accelerating the transition to clean energy.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Gore made the remarks during the 35th anniversary celebration of GLOBE Legislators at the House of Commons, UK Parliament, London, where Nigeria’s Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo was formally inaugurated as the organisation’s new President.
According to Gore, the solutions to the climate crisis already exist, but governments must demonstrate the political will to implement them through effective legislation and policies. He stressed that climate action would strengthen economies, improve public health and enhance global energy security.
In his acceptance speech, Onuigbo pledged to strengthen parliamentary leadership on climate action by promoting climate education, legislative capacity building, green investments and international collaboration among governments, development partners and civil society organisations.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Onuigbo, widely recognised as the architect of Nigeria’s Climate Change Act, said parliaments remain central to delivering meaningful climate progress through legislation, oversight and accountability. He also pledged to deepen parliament-to-parliament cooperation and equip lawmakers with the tools needed to advance sustainable development and climate financing.
The event also featured goodwill messages from global leaders, including Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, who warned that climate-related disasters are becoming increasingly severe worldwide.
