Former Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has called on head coach Éric Chelle to urgently address the team’s defensive weaknesses after Nigeria conceded three goals in their first two matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking in a post-match analysis on Afrosports, Omeruo highlighted concerns following the 3–2 win over Tunisia, where the Eagles let in two goals after also conceding once against Tanzania.
“The defence is still porous, and it is crucial that we stop conceding,” Omeruo stated. “This is an area the coach must urgently address in the next games.”
While acknowledging the team’s attacking strength, Omeruo stressed that continued defensive lapses could jeopardize Nigeria’s campaign for a fourth AFCON title.
“While we know our attack is solid, we cannot afford to keep conceding goals as we have done so far,” he added.
The Super Eagles have already secured qualification for the knockout stages but will aim to tighten their backline ahead of more challenging fixtures in the Round of 16.
