Sports DG Shaibu Urges Super Eagles to Embody ‘Renewed Hope’ Spirit at AFCON

Comrade Philip Shaibu, Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), has congratulated the Super Eagles on their early qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) knockout stages and called on the team to embrace the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shaibu commended the team’s fighting spirit following their 3–2 victory over Tunisia, which secured a Round of 16 spot with a game to spare.

“I must salute the fighting spirit of the Super Eagles. They have clearly put the disappointment of missing the 2026 World Cup behind them,” Shaibu stated.

He praised the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation and celebrated Wilfred Ndidi’s first goal as team captain.

Shaibu linked the team’s success to the supportive environment fostered by the Tinubu administration, citing increased funding for sports and past rewards for national teams like the Super Falcons and D’Tigresses.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu takes a keen interest in the country’s sports sector… These gestures send a strong message to our sportsmen and women,” he added.

He urged the Eagles to maintain focus and aim for a fourth AFCON title, assuring them of the continued support of the NIS in developing coaches and athletes for future competitions.
