One Week On, Oyo Abducted Students and Teachers Still in Captivity — Police Debunk Rescue Claims

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that students, pupils, and teachers abducted during a terrorist attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have not been rescued.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, specifically refuted claims circulating on social media alleging that the victims had already been rescued, describing the reports as fake and capable of undermining ongoing operations.

The coordinated attack occurred on Friday, May 15, 2026, when about 12 gunmen on six motorcycles, dressed in military camouflage, stormed the schools shooting indiscriminately. The affected schools were Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and LEA Primary School, Esiele. Governor Makinde disclosed that seven students were abducted from Community Grammar School, while 18 children and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School.

In a grim turn, one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded by the bandits, with a viral video of his gruesome murder released by the terrorists on Sunday, May 17, 2026, sparking widespread outrage.

President Bola Tinubu condemned the attack as “barbaric,” promising the federal government was working with Oyo State to rescue all victims. Six suspects have been arrested, including alleged informants and logistics suppliers to the kidnappers. A joint rescue operation by soldiers, police and local vigilantes was disrupted after they encountered improvised explosive devices planted by the attackers, leaving several wounded.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, called for a “careful, clinical and timely” operation to rescue the victims, while the Defence Headquarters confirmed that troops had made contact with the abductors and were working to ensure their safe return.
