Orji Uzor Kalu Rejects Biafra, Cites Tinubu’s Assurance of Igbo Presidency as Reason

Former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has publicly stated that historical grievances against the Igbo people are not a sufficient justification to fight for the breakaway state of Biafra.

His remarks come amid renewed debates on restructuring and separatist agitations in the South-East geopolitical zone.

Senator Kalu, who currently serves as the Chief Whip of the Senate, disclosed that his position is significantly influenced by an assurance he received from President Bola Tinubu regarding the prospect of an Igbo presidency in the future.

“I acknowledge that Nigeria has not been fair to the Igbo people. However, that alone is not enough reason to fight against Nigeria in the name of Biafra—especially now that President Tinubu has assured me of an Igbo presidency,” Kalu stated.

He further argued that it would be “ungrateful” for him, having benefited immensely from the Nigerian state, to support its breakup.

The statement is likely to stir considerable debate within the Igbo political landscape, where feelings of marginalisation remain potent, and opinions on the best path to equity—whether through restructuring, presidency, or separation—are deeply divided.

Senator Kalu’s comments align with his long-standing political stance of advocating for Igbo integration and prominence within a unified Nigeria rather than through secessionist movements.
