Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has publicly stated his regret for supporting President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, declaring that the decision did not yield the positive national outcome he had anticipated.
Governor Makinde, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) G5 faction, made this revelation during an interview with journalists at the Government House in Ibadan on Tuesday. He explained that his support was driven by the belief that Tinubu would prioritize the national interest.
“I supported the current president… because I thought we’ll do what is right for the country. But unfortunately, that is not what we’re seeing. I regret that action. Yes, I do,” Makinde stated emphatically.
The governor also firmly stated that President Tinubu would not receive his support in the upcoming 2027 presidential election, emphasizing the need to protect democratic values and the future of the PDP.
Revealing the Split with Nyesom Wike
In his remarks, Governor Makinde disclosed the incident that sparked his political disagreement with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He recounted a meeting where Wike assured President Tinubu that he would “hold PDP for you against 2027.”
Makinde challenged this declaration, asking Wike, “did we agree to this?” He stressed that while individuals may choose their political alignments, such commitments should not be made without broader party consensus, underscoring his commitment to preserving the PDP’s integrity.
This announcement signals significant internal rifts within the PDP and foreshadows evolving political dynamics as the nation approaches the next general elections.
