Pandemics Inevitable, Require Strong Preparedness — Muhammad Ali Pate

Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, has warned that pandemics remain an inevitable global reality, urging governments to strengthen preparedness and response systems.

Speaking at a recent public health engagement, Pate emphasized that lessons from past outbreaks, including COVID-19, highlight the urgent need for resilient healthcare infrastructure and coordinated emergency response mechanisms.

He noted that while pandemics cannot be entirely prevented, their impact can be significantly reduced through early detection, effective surveillance, and timely intervention. According to him, investment in healthcare systems, workforce capacity, and research is critical to mitigating future health crises.

The minister also stressed the importance of collaboration between governments, international organizations, and local communities in addressing emerging health threats. He added that public awareness and adherence to health guidelines play a vital role in controlling disease outbreaks.

Pate reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s health security architecture, including strengthening disease surveillance systems and expanding access to essential medical services.

Health experts have consistently warned that increasing global interconnectedness, urbanization, and climate-related factors could heighten the risk of future pandemics, making preparedness a top priority for nations worldwide.
