PDP and Labour Party Lawmakers Defect to Action Peoples Party, Shake National Assembly

A major political shift has occurred in Nigeria’s National Assembly as two lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and Mathew Nwaogu, have formally defected to the Action Peoples Party (APP).

The lawmakers cited internal crises and disagreements within their former parties as the reason for their departure. Their defection is expected to reshape party dynamics in the House of Representatives and increase the APP’s influence in legislative proceedings.

Following the move, Ugochinyere was appointed as the APP’s House caucus leader, a position that signals the party’s intent to play a more active role in parliamentary debates and policymaking. The party leadership welcomed the lawmakers, describing the development as a significant boost to APP’s presence in the National Assembly and a step toward promoting governance and accountability.

Political analysts note that such defections could trigger further realignments as lawmakers weigh their political futures ahead of upcoming elections. The shift also highlights ongoing tensions within Nigeria’s major parties, with internal disputes prompting members to explore alternatives that align with their political ambitions.

The APP’s strengthened caucus now faces the task of consolidating its new members and leveraging their influence to push legislative priorities and policy initiatives.
