ABUJA — The two warring factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Seyi Makinde have refused to back down, despite mediation efforts by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan summoned both factions to Abuja amid conflicting communications and ahead of upcoming elections in the FCT, Ekiti, and Osun states.
Positions of the Factions:
· Makinde’s camp, represented by spokesman Ini Ememobong, insisted they remain the legitimate party leadership and will continue performing PDP duties while awaiting the Court of Appeal’s judgment on pending cases.
· Wike’s faction, through Acting National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor, stated that those who attended Makinde’s November convention in Ibadan should “return to the party or go wherever else they choose,” noting that some members have already defected to other parties.
INEC’s Stance:
Amupitan emphasized that INEC is statutorily mandated to monitor political party activities, especially with crucial elections approaching in 2026.
The deadlock persists as both sides await judicial resolutions, deepening the crisis within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
