PDP Leadership in Turmoil as Mohammed Claims Acting Chairmanship

Abuja – The leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Monday as the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Abdulrahman Mohammed, declared himself the Acting National Chairman.

The move comes amid a bitter power struggle and counter-suspensions between two factions of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). Heavy security was deployed at the PDP’s national headquarters in Abuja as Mohammed arrived at the secretariat.

Mohammed’s appointment was announced by a faction led by Samuel Anyanwu, which had earlier suspended the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

Addressing supporters and journalists, Mohammed read from a statement titled “A New Dawn,” where he lamented the party’s decline and pledged to heal its divisions.

“Today, we are taking responsibility to restore order and unity in our great party,” Mohammed stated. “The PDP belongs to its members, and no one individual can hold it hostage.”

He vowed to reposition the PDP, organize an inclusive national convention, and complete outstanding congresses at all levels. “My job here as Acting National Chairman is to heal the party of its wounds and end factionalisation,” he declared.

The incumbent National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, and his loyalists were notably absent during these events, deepening the uncertainty surrounding the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
