UMUAHIA – The unity of the Umudiawa Ancient Kingdom in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State is under strain following a deepening leadership dispute that has sparked allegations of political interference.
For years, the community has been led by His Royal Eminence, Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu (Oroko Abia), the Diawa of Umudiawa Ancient Kingdom. However, tensions recently escalated with the formation of a rival union, the Umudiawa Progressive Union (UPU), which held a parallel conference just hours after the recognised Umudiawa Community Development Union (UCDU) convened its meeting.
The palace has accused the Member representing Umuahia/Ikwuano Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, of sponsoring the splinter group. Sources claim the rift stems from political disagreements, alleging that the traditional ruler is being targeted for his perceived support of Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Further allegations suggest the traditional ruler’s name was omitted from a recent event’s protocol list, purportedly to avoid discouraging Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, from attending.
Efforts to reach Hon. Obi Aguocha for comment were unsuccessful.
Community leaders have called for dialogue, warning that prolonged division could threaten peace and development in Umudiawa.
