Political Earthquake in Kano: Ganduje’s Son Dumps APC, Joins Kwankwaso’s NDC to Contest House of Reps Seat

A dramatic political earthquake has struck Kano State as Abdulaziz Umar Ganduje, the eldest son of former APC National Chairman and ex-Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has formally dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s rapidly growing National Democratic Congress (NDC) — sending shockwaves across Kano’s already volatile political landscape.

Abdulaziz, who obtained the NDC nomination form to contest for the Dawakin Tofa/Tofa/Rimin Gado Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, has long been a member of the Kwankwasiyya movement loyal to Kwankwaso — maintaining that allegiance despite his father’s years of dominance within the APC structure.

A video circulating on social media showed Abdulaziz speaking directly with Kwankwaso about his political ambitions, publicly confirming his alignment with the former governor’s expanding political network ahead of 2027.

Abdulaziz is seeking the same House of Representatives seat previously contested by his brother, Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, under the APC in 2023. Despite the influence of their father who was Kano governor at the time, the APC lost the constituency to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate.

The development represents a significant twist in Kano politics given the long-standing political rivalry between Kwankwaso and Ganduje — two former allies who served together in government before their relationship deteriorated after Ganduje succeeded Kwankwaso as governor in 2015, leading to years of bitter political disagreements.

Political observers say Abdulaziz’s defection could reshape dynamics within the constituency, traditionally considered an APC stronghold, with expectations of a fierce contest between the NDC and APC camps ahead of 2027.

The APC in Kano State is yet to officially respond to the development.
