Tensions escalated in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Thursday as opposition figures mobilized for a planned protest over the ongoing leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the controversial stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The demonstration, organized by the National Opposition Movement (NOM), followed formal notification to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), requesting traffic control and security support for the peaceful march.
According to organizers, the protest commenced at Maitama Transcorp Junction, moving through Shehu Shagari Way and ending at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. About 1,000 participants were expected to take part, beginning from 10 a.m.
The protest comes amid rising discontent over INEC’s decision to suspend recognition of all factions within the ADC due to a prolonged leadership dispute.
The crisis involves rival claims between camps loyal to David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe.
INEC cited a ruling by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria directing parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of a suit before the Federal High Court.
The commission has since halted party activities and disengaged from all factions, intensifying political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Observers say the protest underscores growing dissatisfaction within opposition ranks and signals a potentially turbulent political climate if the crisis remains unresolved.
