A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Umuahia has remanded one Nnachi Divine Mark Idume at the Afara Correctional Centre over allegations of publishing and circulating a false report involving former Abia State Governor, Senator Theodore Ahamefule (T.A.) Orji.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the defendant was arraigned under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2025 (as amended), in Charge No. U/306C/2026, filed by the Commissioner of Police.
According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly published a fake EFCC story on T.A. Orji, claiming that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided the former governor’s residence and recovered US$5 billion, pre-written election results, ₦1 trillion worth of gold necklaces and more than 200 exotic vehicles.
The prosecution maintained that the allegations were false, unverified and deliberately circulated to mislead the public, attract online traffic and damage the reputation of the former governor.
CDA News Nigeria reports that after the defendant’s arraignment, the court ordered his remand at the Afara Correctional Centre pending further proceedings. The matter was adjourned until August 27, 2027.
The report noted that the case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to enforce the Cybercrimes Act against the deliberate publication and dissemination of false information through digital platforms.
